Incorporating Fitness into your Leisure Time

Your time away from work and chores should be spent unwinding and rejuvenating yourself. However, fitness should be incorporated into your spare time too. Leisure should include activities that benefit your mental and physical health.

Obesity is an epidemic that is out of control in developed countries. By using some of your leisure time and dedicating it to fitness, you will prevent disease and improve your sleep, mood and energy levels. Fitness does not need to be overly strenuous or unpleasant - there are many activities that you can do with your family that are fun. Your community might have a leisure guide that lists all of these activities - guided walking tours, snowshoeing lessons, learning to dance with your partner; having fun while getting fit will benefit your health in many ways.

Exercise doesn't need to cost money. Recruit your spouse or a friend to keep you motivated. Choose some scenic routes and go for long walks along the water or in a forest. Get in touch with nature and look for wild animals that you wouldn't see anywhere else.

Help your kids practice their soccer, baseball or hockey skills. Consider signing up as a coach on your kids' team and you will not only be able to spend time bonding with your kids, you will get out of the house and get some exercise at the same time.

Speaking of spending time with your kids, when was the last time that you played like one? Play tag or hide-and-go seek with your kids! Horsing around gets your heart rate going and burns calories! Plus it is fun. Take your kids to the local swimming pool and play some water games with them. Visit the local park and push your kids on the swings.

Leisure time is important for your mental health, and so is fitness. If you can incorporate leisure time and exercise you are on your way to a healthy lifestyle. Being active not only benefits your health and longevity, it sets a great example for your children - who want you to be there for them as they grow up.
